Brake linings for forging press

When one of the world’s most powerful forging presses experienced premature wear in its brake and clutch linings, a solution was required that combined high mechanical strength with the correct friction characteristics. The result was a dimensioned and long-lasting design adapted for extreme loads.

Extreme Press Force – Extreme Stress
The Swedish subsidiary of a global manufacturer of forged engine and chassis components operates one of the world’s most advanced and powerful forging presses.

With a press force of 16,000 tons, it is used to manufacture components such as front axle beams for trucks and buses. The load on the tool’s moving parts is extremely high, placing significant demands on brake and clutch performance.

The issue was that the existing friction linings cracked and wore out too quickly. This affected both operational reliability and service economics.

Engineered Solution for High Strength
Based on specified requirements for braking force and braking torque, we developed a technically engineered solution.

The lining was designed with:

  • A core made of mechanically robust material

  • Wear surfaces coated with friction material adapted to the specific load conditions

  • Optimized geometry for even force distribution

Material selection and design were dimensioned to withstand both high pressures and repeated load cycles.

Improved Service Life and Stable Performance
Initial testing verified functionality and movement patterns within the tool. Subsequent operation demonstrated that the new solution delivered a significantly longer service life compared to previous linings.

The result was improved operational reliability, reduced maintenance requirements, and stable production at one of the world’s most powerful forging facilities.
